What is Coaching?

NWIEP Logo
Coaching is:

“A process which focuses on performance improvement and creating sustainable personal change. Helping individuals and teams to discover their own solutions to problems and to unlock their undiscovered potential.

"Coaching helps people to become the best they can be.”
North West Employers

“You get the best effort from others not by lighting a fire beneath them, but by building a fire within.”
Dr Bob Nelson (Founder of the National Association for Employee Recognition USA, Best Selling Author of 'Management for Dummies' and Motivational Speaker)

“You can motivate by fear, and you can motivate by reward, but both those methods are only temporary. The only lasting thing is self motivation.”
Homer Rice (Athletics Director, Georgia University and winner of nine Coach of the Year Awards)

Our Regional Approach to Coaching

North West Employers takes the view that coaching is a vital part of our approach and strategy going forward. We see it as one of the most powerful development tools available to the public sector and wholeheartedly support and champion integrating coaching into all of our organisations. This strategy is part of, and integral to, our support of coaching.

Coaching Supports Our Core Values

Which include:
  • People taking responsibility for their own learning and actions.
  • Real learning happening at the boundaries of what you know and what you don't know.
  • Real learning requiring a commitment to explore new ideas and different views of the world.
These values underpin our coaching approach and translate into our work with individuals, groups and organisations. Our view is:
  • Coaching deals with our internal dialogue and our beliefs about how we influence the external world.
  • Coaching works best where there is commitment from the coachee to develop their self awareness and take responsibility for their own learning and actions.
  • Coaching is, by its nature, a challenging process as it asks you to question your preconceptions of yourself and others.
  • Coaching requires a willingness by both coach and coachee to experiment with new ways of doing things and new behaviours.
The coaching we provide works on the premise that there is no one right answer and people have the right to choose the approach that fits for them. Our coaches come from many different disciplines and are experienced in many different styles including:
  • Gestalt
  • Neuro Linguistic Programming
  • Transactional Analysis
  • Emotional Intelligence
  • Solution Focused Approach
  • Person Centred Approach
