What is the North West Mentoring Scheme?

The North West NHS Mentoring Scheme was launched by Cheshire & Merseyside, Cumbria & Lancashire and Greater Manchester Strategic Health Authorities in June 2004 and has proved a great success story with 800 people (both mentors and mentees) currently in the scheme. The Greater Manchester West Mental Health Foundation Trust is now hosting the scheme until March 2010.

The North West Mentoring Scheme provides a high quality, confidential service to match mentees with appropriate and qualified mentors and is specifically for those who wish to access a Mentor from outside their own organisation or to provide access where no local schemes are available. It is therefore designed to be complementary to local mentor schemes on a formal and informal basis.

Please Note: The scheme offered by the Leadership and Transformation Gateway in partnership with the NHS is only available to North West local authorities. If you are from an NHS organisation, please contact the North West Mentoring Scheme direct.

Overall Strategy

“…to develop leadership capacity at all levels in the North West. This strategy aims to develop staff leadership abilities to lead to innovation and integration of services."

Take Advantage of the North West Mentoring Scheme through the Leadership and Transformation Gateway

Building on the success of the NHS, through the Leadership and Transformation Gateway, we have established a cross-sector partnership which will support the development of managers and leaders in local government, dedicated to supporting leadership and professional development in the North West.

Combined with shared learning and experience of working colleagues in the NHS, this should provide a valuable opportunity for individual, organisational and regional growth. It will also give those involved the chance to work with people from across sectors.

We have been working with NHS colleagues to develop this offer which takes full advantage of their existing scheme and promotes leadership and organisational development within authorities. Working across sectors is a crucial skill for managers now and even more so in the future, and in supporting this we are delighted to offer 50 mentor and 100 mentee funded places for local authority employees into the NHS mentoring programme.

Mentoring can be a powerful development process for both the mentor and mentee. It is hoped that this partnership will complement existing schemes and development initiatives already available within authorities.
