Learning and Development Practice

Our learning and development team provide a regionaLearning and Development Mattersl service to support individual authorities. There is a huge variation in authorities in the North West in terms of size and culture and these diverse needs have helped shape the services we offer.

We provide support and services in the following three areas.

Advice and Information

We provide advice on a range of topics, eg:

  • Examples of exercises/materials for specific programmes.
  • Information on contacts in other organisations that may already have a policy or developed a programme on a given subject.
  • Information and contacts for consultants who provide services in specific areas.
  • Advice and guidance on specialist areas, eg Elected Member development, mediation, project management, employee relations development.
We also provide access to information through a range of sources, eg:

  • Updates on some key areas of learning and development practice.
  • Gather and disseminate information for national organisations, eg the former People Skills Scoreboard survey which is now incorporated into the Local Government Pay and Workforce Strategy survey. Click below for a copy.
  • Leaning & Development Matters newsletter, Charter Celebration newsletter, Equality and Diversity Celebration newsletter and Member Development updates. Click below for copies.
  • Networking opportunities through established networks, eg Learning and Development Network and ad hoc topic-based knowledge sharing events. Click below for the networking page.
  • Mini surveys and network intelligence, for information in a hurry. If authorities have specific questions we’ll use our network of contacts to circulate your query and co-ordinate a response.

Learning and Development Practice

In addition to the core service of providing support and advice on a range of subjects, there are several areas where we take a particular interest, as they have significant impact on the authorities’ performance.

These areas are where we have focused our attention over a period of time and share our approaches or signpost other resources/materials:

  • Conflict Resolution
  • Individual Development
  • Management and Leadership
  • Skills Audits
  • Skills for Life
  • Learning and Development Needs Analysis
Direct Delivery

In addition to our core service we are regularly approached by authorities to deliver programmes and consultancy assignments for them. In addition to our own team we have an extended team of experienced Associates who have built up an understanding of the issues that local authorities face.

Our direct delivery service operates at two levels; in authority bespoke programmes and a regional programme of events. About 80% of our work is delivered in individual authorities and we believe this sharpens our practice and means we have an understanding of the issues authorities face and how this impacts on their day to day work.

For further information on our current Calendar of Events and the range of programmes available for in-house delivery, click below.

Course Calendar

Our unique position as part of the regional local government landscape means that we are more than just a consultancy, and we are regularly asked to provide or broker events for authorities’ very specific and, sometimes, curious needs. Examples included body piercing regulations and Come into the Parlour – event for new Mayors.
