Charter Celebration Event 2007
On Friday, 23 November, we held our seventh Annual Celebration Event for Elected Member Development. The day was a genuine celebration and Members excelled themselves with presentations including singing, a sketch, poetry and even Blind Date (Development!).
The Rt Hon Beverley Hughes MP, Minister for Children, Young People and Families and Minister for the North West, presented the awards to the seven successful authorities at Level 1 of the Charter:

Bolton Council
Cumbria County Council
Eden District Council
Knowsley Metropolitan Borough Council
Macclesfield Borough Council
Sefton Metropolitan Borough Council
Trafford Metropolitan Borough Council
In addition, we had two authorities that met the Level 2 Exemplar Award standard:
Blackpool Council
Halton Borough Council
The Minister said:
“I think, firstly, it (the Charter) has completely changed the perception that existed hitherto about the importance of member development. When I first became a councillor in 1986 that was not on the agenda at all and you really didn’t get any induction very much, let alone continuous training, so it’s completely transformed the understanding about the importance of that. And, secondly of course, I think particularly here in the North West the Employers Organisation has shown a really important lead in how best to do that because of the programmes that they have incepted here and I think it has been a template that the rest of the country is following.”
38 of the 51 authorities signed up to the Charter have now achieved it, so if you want to join the list of authorities to achieve the Award next year, e-mail Ruth Ashworth below.
