On the day Phil Woolas MP, Minister for the North West, sent the following address: "I'm delighted that all 41 local authorities in the North West have signed up to the Member Development Charter. It demonstrates a dedication to meeting the needs of your communities that should be at the heart of every local authority and public body.
Congratulations to everyone who is being awarded the Charter today. I hope that the event is a great success."

Some of the highlights of last week’s event, where many authorities took the opportunity to show off their hidden talents for drama and humour around the theme of Member development were: a Councillor comparing getting elected to a local authority with having a baby; and a pink piggy bank and huge pairs of glasses and ears being used as props in an impromptu pantomime. Other memorable moments were Question Time, Dragon’s Den, Family Fortunes, a pub scene (I know it sounds like prime time TV and it certainly made good viewing). There were councillors going from e-literate to e-smart and other informative and enjoyable presentations.

Lancashire Police Authority was particularly pleased as they took away the MJ Prize, which is presented to one of the Level 1 authorities for their innovative approach to Member development.

The event was a most enjoyable interlude in the gathering gloom of cuts facing all councils and a celebration of the commitment, versatility and enjoyment that most Officers and Councillors still get from working in local government.
