Member Development Gateway
The Member Development Gateway has evolved since its creation into a highly successful and central access point for information, advice and signposting of development opportunities for Elected Members. It also supports a vibrant regional Member Development Network and is well positioned to support the delivery of outcomes outlined in the regional and sub-regional strategies.
North West Employers and the IDeA, NWIN (now part of the North West Improvement and Efficiency Partnership - NWIEP) and their partners share a commitment to improve the support to individual Members, local authorities and the sub regions. Together they have invested significant funding to ensure that the North West continues to improve and demonstrates its commitment to excellence in the area of Member development.
This year, the Member Development Gateway will provide:
- A website strengthened through shared good practice and collaborative working with the IDeA and the Workforce and Neighbourhoods Gateways.
- Advice on learning and development opportunities: development of two Accredited Member Programmes, one for Working in Neighbourhoods and one for Member Champions; regional workshops; individual/group/committee coaching sessions; subsidised places on the IDeA Peer Mentoring Scheme; subsidised development opportunities for Leaders including two action learning sets and a tailored coaching programme.
- Access to an on-line ‘bite sized’ modular e-learning programme – Modern Councillor and the development of two new bespoke e-learning modules.
- The opportunity to share learning and good practice via Regional Network meetings and the hosting of two regional conferences.
- Links to key local government organisations and information on emerging developments in local government.
- Encouragement of innovation with an offer of funding up to £5k through the Innovation Fund.
- Support for the development of Member Development Officers
- Guidance and support via the North West Charter for Elected Member Development to evaluate the impact of learning.
- Support for Political Leadership Development – four subsidised places per sub region on the IDeA Leadership Academy.
The links on the left hand side of this page will help you to access all areas of useful information for your role as a Councillor. For example, ‘What Every Councillor Needs to Know’ is a valuable place to start for all new Councillors.
