We have tried to cater for people’s different learning styles and preferences, and the options include mentoring, online learning, programmes and events.

To widen the options further we have included development available nationally, regionally and in each of the five sub-regions of the North West.

If there is anything you wish to add, please click the link below to e-mail the Gateway Adviser.

Learning Methods

At the very core of the Gateway is a desire to support people in their development so that communities and the region as a whole improve.

The starting point for the journey is individual learning and we have included some essential materials to help Elected Members think about how they learn and what sort of development would suit them.

We acknowledge that many authorities already provide a range of support to assist Members in their development and some of the resources may already be available within your authority.

Learning for Everyone - The Campaign for Learning is working for an inclusive society in which learning is understood, valued and accessible to everyone as of right. It aims to stimulate learning that will sustain people for life.

Campaign for Learning

NLP (Neuro Linguistic Programming) – Can assist in gaining an insight into how people think and feel in ways which promote understanding, tolerance, rapport and excellence in communications. North West Employers is an accredited provider of this instrument. For more information click the link below.

Kelli Pickford

VARK (Visual, Aural, Read/Write, Kinesthetic) - This questionnaire aims to find out something about your preferences for the way you work with information.

VARK

Learning Styles Questionnaire - Developed by Honey & Mumford, the learning styles questionnaire equips people to become smarter at selecting appropriate learning activities and expanding their repertoire.

Community of Practice

A Community of Practice is a network of individuals with common problems or interests, usually with a specific area of knowledge. They explore new ways of working, develop solutions to problems, and share good practice and ideas. This can happen face-to-face or in an online environment.

For those with a larger appetite we have worked in partnership with the IDeA to set up a Community of Practice for those people in the North West who are interested in Elected Member development.

To help Communities of Practice in local government create and share their knowledge, the IDeA has developed an online environment that provides a range of collaborative tools. Click the link below.
