Action Learning
"Learning must be equal to or greater than the rate of change."
Reg Revans
Reg Revans is widely credited as the man who developed action learning throughout Europe. Regarded as the founder of action learning, his vision was for
“practical business people learning from each other, creating their own resources, identifying their own problems and forming their own solutions.” Action Learning in the Gateway
Action learning in the Gateway has been a huge success. We have successfully delivered a series of Action Learning Sets for the HR community as well as delivering a regional conference, in partnership with Liverpool John Moores University, where representatives were brought together from across the public sector to begin to explore the context of action learning in various settings including with communities and Elected Members.

As part of the regional framework, we are supporting a series of action learning programmes:
- Cross Sector Action Learning for Strategic HR.
- Strategic HR and CAA.
- Childrens and Adults Workforce.
- Personalisation of CARE.
- Elected Member Action Learning.

To support our regional strategy, we have 34 participants involved in an Action Learning Facilitator Training programme, funded by NWIEP and in partnership with the University of Chester.
Our overall aim is to train up a critical mass of action learning facilitators who will not only support their own organisations via appropriate action leaning, but will also contribute to the sub-regional and regional agendas. This group will provide a valuable resource and help to develop a sustainable legacy to support ongoing and future exploration and action. They are already involved in some of the projects used above as well as supporting the learning agenda within their own organisations. Action Learning has powerful advocates and enthusiastic practitioners but it is promoted in a variety of forms that can be confusing. Sometimes it is also over-promoted as a multi-purpose tool or technique to use in response to any challenge.
The University of Chester has developed a programme of training and development that takes these factors into account and we are extremely pleased to offer an accredited programme to North West practitioners. The programme builds on the discussions and practice that have taken place across the region. It is structured around a series of workshops and linked practice that provides underpinning knowledge and skills development to enable participants to become confident and competent facilitators of Action Learning Sets with a critical understanding of its use in a variety of contexts.
Action Learning Outside the Gateway
Action Learning: Assessing the Value, an international action learning conference, takes place in March 2010. It follows on from the successful experience in March 2008, where practitioners, academics and managers shared ideas and advanced the practices of action learning worldwide.
