North West Mentoring Scheme

NWIEP Logo

The North West NHS Mentoring Scheme was launched by Cheshire & Merseyside, Cumbria & Lancashire and Greater Manchester Strategic Health Authorities in June 2004 and has proved a great success story.

Building on the success of the NHS, through the Leadership and Organisational Development Gateway, we have established a cross sector partnership which will support the development of managers and leaders in local government, dedicated to supporting leadership and professional development in the North West.

Combined with shared learning and experience of working with colleagues in the NHS, this should provide a valuable opportunity for individual, organisational and regional growth. It will also give those involved the chance to work with people from cross sector organisations.

Over the last 12 months we have been working with NHS colleagues to develop this offer, which takes full advantage of their existing scheme and promotes Leadership and Organisational Development across the region. We have a fundamental belief that working across sectors will be a crucial skill for managers now and in the future and in supporting this we are delighted to offer 50 mentor and 100 mentee funded places into the NHS mentoring programme.

Interested in Becoming a Mentor?

If you feel you have skills and experience that can support others within their development journey, as well as welcome the challenge to develop your own approach, why not become a mentor?

We have three one-day briefings planned across the North West which we ask you to attend before committing yourself to the process. The event will ensure a joint understanding of the role and you will receive a support pack that guides you through the scheme and your role as a mentor. Once completed you will then join the process as a mentor, and mentee's will be allocated based on needs and skills offered.

Interested in Being a Mentee?

If you would like the opportunity to work with a mentor to support your development goals, why not become a mentee?

The half-day briefings are between 12.15pm and 4.30pm, and are being held around the region to provide you with more information about the process and to discuss how mentoring can support your development.

So What is Mentoring?

Modern mentoring, described as ‘developmental mentoring’, focuses upon the needs of the individual. Mentors encourage autonomy and self development, and help to identify and attain, rather than provide, opportunities for development.

Research by Clutterbuck and Megginson (1999) suggests that good mentoring will do some of the following:

  • Develop insights
  • Develop mutual support systems
  • Enable learning
  • Promote networking
  • Perpetuate positive corporate learning cultures
  • Promote careers
  • Analyse life purpose

“In mentoring, the learner sets his or her own agenda rather than having it set jointly.”
Megginson & Stokes, 2004

A mentoring relationship is shaped by the wishes, needs and aspirations of the mentee and by the skills and experience of the mentor. It is a unique relationship, and rules and guidelines are agreed between the mentor and the mentee.
