Bullying and Harassment Investigators' Training
The process of dealing effectively with complaints regarding inappropriate behaviour within the workplace is vitally important, both as an organisational responsibility and in creating a culture that is respectful of others’ feelings and the diversity of the workforce. When a formal complaint is raised within your bullying and harassment policy, those who investigate such complaints should be trained and allowed to carry out the role effectively.
The role of the Investigator within the organisation should be given careful consideration and organisations should ensure that investigators have the ability to suspend any judgement on the outcome of the case until all the facts and evidence have been gathered. They should possess personal communication skills allowing them to have the ability to listen actively, build rapport with interviewees and ask probing questions that elicit the maximum amount of information. They should have a high level of personal awareness and an understanding of how their communication style may affect the effectiveness of the interview as well as good attention to detail, to assess evidence, highlight gaps/deletions in accounts of events and probe for further details where required. In addition, investigators must be aware of the behaviours and principles of dealing with bullying and harassment and appreciate how such investigatory interviews may differ from other investigations/interviews they have previously been involved in.
